Sand Motor Conference Workshops

Session A: Sand, Sea, Life: ecology and morphology

The ecological and morphological development of the Sand Motor has been monitored intensively over the last ten years. This session focuses on the main outcomes: What were the expectations? Has the Sand Motor accomplished what it was designed for?  And why was the Sand Motor designed in this shape?

Hosts and presenters: Bas Huisman, Jeroen Wijsman and others

Session B: An attractive area: socio-economic effects

What added value brings the Sand Motor to society? In 2016 the international audit-commission strongly recommended to examine this. In this session we discuss the outcomes of a study identifying the valuation and appreciation of the Sand Motor amongst visitors as well as added value for society, including arts, archeology and education.

Hosts and presenters: Heleen Vreugdenhil and others.

Session C: Management and planning: Effective management

In this workshop we focus on the management of the Sand Motor. We focus on questions like how science improved swimmer safety and mapped ecological impacts. Challenges in governance are discussed with the province of Zuid-Holland.

Hosts and presenters: Marcel Taal, Hans Kleij and others

Session D: Science, innovation and export: Knowledge development, innovation and application abroad

One of the Sand Engine aims was to boost science and innovation. In this session we discuss the impact of the Sand Engine in the last 10 years on these items, and will discuss how Sand Engine science has resulted in spinoff: Has the Sand Motor concept been applied elsewhere? What innovations were boosted by it? Looking forward, we’ll look into possible designs for a next sandy intervention. What would be most interesting from a science or innovation perspective? A hook, a peninsula, an island or other shapes? We conclude the session with the question: 10 years Sand Motor, what’s next?

Hosts and presenters: Matthieu de Schipper, Bart-Jan van der Spek, Alexander van Oudenhoven and others
